The Latest: On Friday morning, May 23, Pastor Bryant Lee and I met with Dr. Karen Perkins, Executive Director of Community Development at Humble I.S.D. Pastor Bryant and I presented to Dr. Perkins our vision for an after school mentoring program at an Humble I.S.D. middle school. Dr. Perkins could not have been more enthusiastic and encouraging!
The vision involves a four-way partnership between Humble I.S.D., a terrific organi-zation called Prepared 4 Life, a local college with a strong "service learning" emphasis, and Pastor Bryant's Higher Expectations Church. Simply put, Humble I.S.D. would provide the school, Prepared 4 Life would provide the program, the local college would provide students to serve as volunteer mentors, and Pastor Bryant, a Master Sergeant in the US Army, would mentor the mentors.
Where do things stand? On Tuesday, May 27, I will be meeting with the staff of Prepared 4 Life to discuss the project. Pastor Bryant is meeting with the principal of the middle school we'd like to help, so as soon as we get her support we will let you know exactly which middle school it is. Pastor Bryant is also connecting with the local college, so we will unveil that as things develop. Finally, Dr. Perkins is arranging a meeting of all the key players within Humble I.S.D. as well as key community partners for early in June.
How can you pray? First of all thank God for the open doors and open arms we've encountered so far. It's been very encouraging! Also pray that our discussions with the middle school and the local college would be just as warmly received. And pray that God would knit the team together into a force for life transformation among the middle schoolers of Humble I.S.D.
Blessings, Keith (Humble High School Class of 1977)
With the passing of my dear friend Dwight McCoslin, my meeting with Prepared 4 Life has been moved to later in the week. Thanks for your prayers.
